About THORSEN BOATWORKS
Paul Thorsen, the founder of Thorsen Boatworks, loved boating from the very start. His dreams of delivering a boat with superior attention to detail began at a young age. At age 8, Paul began drawing boats which set his passion in motion. He built his first at age 14 which was an 8 ft hydroplane. Two years later he designed and built a 7 ft flat bottom racer. In 1973, Paul restored a wooden 1955 Aristocraft 13, which his son Presten still has to this day. In 1974, Paul went to work at J.C. Boats, building fiberglass commercial lobster boats. In 1982, he was hired as a fiberglass mold maker and later became the foreman at a shop that was at the cutting edge of fiberglass injection technology. In 1985, he designed and built a 16 ft fiberglass boat powered by a 200 hp Mercury engine. Paul Thorsen comes from a family rich in boating history that began with his grandfather who became a master carpenter in the Norwegian Navy. Paul's father was a chief engineer in the Merchant Marines before and during WWII and in civilian life first enjoyed the sea with an 18 ft dory and outboard motor. In 1960, his father purchased a 1938 Johnson Brothers 20 ft runabout, a very seaworthy (but wet) boat. In 1965, Paul's father purchased a 26 ft Pacemaker which he enjoyed for the next 30 years. The Thorsen family affinity for boating has spanned over generations to include Paul's son Presten who has been helping his father from the age of 8. Presten is now one of the best fiberglass laminators in the northeast. Looking for a retirement project, Paul has started this small personalized boat business with the goal of creating high end boats for those with discerning taste who appreciate the very best.
